How
Roots of Hope has begun collecting used and new cellphones across the country. These phones are then organized in our inventory system. Phones are then shipped either by our collectors across the country, or Roots of Hope, to our partner EcoPhones. EcoPhones recycles the phones, and pays us for each phone we provide them. We then use these funds to purchase new, Cuba-ready phones to be delivered to youth on the island.
How the phones get to Cuba
While the collection process in the United States and abroad is completely transparent, the majority of our distribution methods are kept confidential and are not released to the public. We do this for three reasons:
- The security of those in Cuba that use our shipped phones
- The security of our transportation methods
- The security of the project
However, many Cuban-Americans or friends of Cuban-Americans travel to Cuba every year to visit family and drop off supplies. If any traveler ever wants to request phones for friends or family in Cuba, we would be more than happy to provide them with phones for those in Cuba.
